Northwest Naturals Recalls Frozen Chicken Recipe Due to Salmonella and Listeria
Both products tested positive for Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes, posing health risks to pets and to people who handle the food or contaminated surfaces.
What to do
- 1Check the bag now — match the lot code and best-by date printed on your package against the two recalled lots: Lot B-5 / Best By 01/26/2028 (2 lb. cat food, UPC 087316384956) and Lot B-19 / Best By 01/25/2028 (6 lb. dog food, UPC 087316380392).
- 2Stop feeding the product immediately if your bag matches either recalled lot.
- 3Return the unused product to the store where you bought it for a full refund. Do not dispose of it in a way that other animals can access it.
- 4Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling the product or any surfaces, bowls, or utensils it contacted. Clean and sanitize those surfaces and items before further use.
- 5Contact your veterinarian if your pet has eaten from a recalled lot and is showing any symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, or fever.

What happened
Northwest Naturals of Portland, Oregon announced on August 28, 2026 that it is voluntarily recalling 53 cases (1,272 lbs.) of its Frozen Chicken Recipe for cats (2 lb. bag) and 19 cases (684 lbs.) of its Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe (6 lb. bag). The recall covers two specific lots distributed to retail stores nationwide.
The contamination was identified after the FDA collected and tested product samples. The cat food tested positive for Salmonella. The dog food tested positive for both Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella. No illnesses in people or animals have been reported in connection with this recall as of the announcement date.
Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes are hazardous not only to pets but also to anyone in the household who handles the food, bowls, utensils, or surfaces that came in contact with it. People who are pregnant, elderly, very young, or immunocompromised face elevated risk of serious illness from Listeria monocytogenes. Salmonella infection in people can, in severe cases, spread beyond the digestive tract and require hospitalization.
Pets that have eaten contaminated food may show lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain. Pets that appear healthy can still carry and spread the bacteria to other animals and people. Contact your veterinarian if your pet has consumed the recalled product and is showing any of these signs.
Northwest Naturals instructs consumers who purchased these lots to stop feeding the product immediately and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
